But first, there was plenty of hard work to be done, a lot of it with Seattle batting coach Lee Elia.

“I have an understanding of what’s going on.” Alex said during spring training in 1996. “This is not like my first spring— that I'm in awe of the big eagues or something. I’m just trying to get my stuff together.”
